Ramani, a native of Mulankunnathukavu in Thrissur, has devoted her medical career to serving some of the most underserved communities in Kerala. She began her professional journey in 1982 with her first appointment at Edappal in Malappuram district, a region that was then socially and medically underdeveloped.

At the time, institutional deliveries were uncommon, and most childbirths took place at home. Dr. Ramani responded to this reality with remarkable dedication, attending deliveries at patients’ homes regardless of the hour. Often, she would remain with families for an entire day to ensure the safe delivery of both mother and child. The successful safeguarding of countless mothers and newborns remains one of the most fulfilling aspects of her career.

She extended comprehensive medical care to economically disadvantaged patients and frequently visited bedridden individuals at their homes to provide treatment. Following a transfer to a tribal (Adivasi) region, she continued her service with unwavering commitment—offering treatment, conducting health awareness programs, and walking nearly six kilometers to reach remote settlements. In Kalikavu, she notably conducted a rare and complex delivery of a two-headed baby through normal childbirth.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Ramani has conducted more than 25,000 deliveries. After completing her M.D., she continued serving tribal communities in Nilambur and Manjeri, further strengthening rural healthcare access.

Demonstrating exceptional social commitment, she organized monthly free medical camps, including clinical consultations, blood tests, and free distribution of medicines at her own expense. She ensured that medical samples received from pharmaceutical representatives were distributed to poor patients and also extended financial assistance to those in need. She regularly visited orphanages to provide care and support to abandoned patients.

Dr. Ramani later served as Vigilance Director in the state capital, where she took firm action against medical negligence and unauthorized private practice. Her integrity and fearless investigations earned her recognition as a principled and uncompromising administrator within the medical community.

Currently, Dr. P.N. Ramani continues her service as a physician at the Karakonam Medical College, carrying forward a legacy of dedication, integrity, and humanitarian care.
